Gary joined The Valley Boys in 1988 when Doug left. He played bass in a band called Fool's Gold with John in the early '70s. A band that also included Kelly Keagy, who went on to be quite popular in the group Night Ranger. Gary also plays guitar and piano, though mostly in the studio. He is a lifelong musician and songwriter, who has been seen occasionally coming out from behind the drums at the Ramada to play bass or sing. He toured the Northwest for many years in groups such as the Bandits, the Coasters, with Fred Stickley of Portland's the Flying Stickleys, Dan Bergstrom Band, the American Frog and the West Coast Players. From country to rock to jazz, Gary is a versatile musician who can get them up dancing. In addition, Gary has been involved with video production for many years. He has written and produced special interest videos, dabbled in television, and has shot and edited many projects dealing with first aid and CPR.
Gary
also has a duo called Glider with an album available at CD Baby.

John was born and raised in Stayton, Oregon, and started playing piano at age six. He took up guitar as a teenager and began playing bands in the '60s, starting with jazz piano but soon moving on to rock and roll. His first love was the biological sciences, but at the suggestion of his high school biology teacher, he chose a career in music. After moving to Eugene to attend the University of Oregon music school, he began playing professionally in 1969, and is still a career musician, whether playing solo or with his bands, teaching guitar, or hosting open mikes. His credits include Wheatfield in the '70s, the Ron Lloyd Band in the '80s, stints in venues from Alaska to Vegas and over 25 years of The Valley Boys. John plays guitar and keyboards with the band, shares lead vocals, writes songs and does most of the jumping around. He spends his daytimes hiking, biking, writing songs & poems, teaching guitar and piano, eating Astro Pops, and trying to clean out his van. He has been involved with the Relay For Life for years, and administrates the Ben Powell Young Musician's Fund in honor of his late son. He enjoys the outdoors, in particular the family cabin at Ten Mile Creek on the Oregon Coast, and recently spent a month in China trying to bring American culture, of sorts, to its oldest capital. He can always use a few more guitar students (541-729-9928). John also has another band: http://thecheeseburgers.com |

Alan got a late start in the music business. He didn't pick it up when he was a teenager, like most did. Sitting in to play bass and adding vocals and harmonies with a few people turned into a long-haired (who wasn't?) country rock band back in the '70s. Alan then played with Ron Lloyd, a popular local musician, and the two of them toured around in their hippie buses providing an unusual musical experience throughout the Northwest for a couple of years. It was at this time that John joined. The Ron Lloyd Band gained regional notoriety until it dissolved in the early '80s. John and Alan stayed together and, after a drummer or two, were joined by Gary, who now makes up the three (not six as some have insisted) members of The Valley Boys, who have been a continuously working band for over 25 years. (That's over 107 . . . in rock 'n roll years!) |
